At the TOP and very BOTTOM of this page there are some great resources, videos and courses which may be useful in helping students in school, athletics and life. Towards the MIDDLE of this page there is a section devoted to those student-athletes who may be interested in competing in track & field or other sports at the college level. Keep in mind that eligibility guidelines are always changing so visit with your guidance counselor soon and register for the NCAA or NAIA clearinghouse to stay up to date with all the changes.

What should I pack in my bag for track meets?
Use this document to help you pack for track meets. Most track meets are single day meets lasting anywhere from 4-8 hours while we do have a few out of town meets that may require longer travel and overnight stays in hotels. Remember to always take more than what you think you need as weather in South Dakota can change quite often and it's better to pack too much, having items and not need them vs. leaving items home, not having them and need them.
What should I leave home and NOT pack in my bag for track meets?
There are many things you will need to bring to track meets, however, there are many things that can be a distraction to you and others. This document will inform you about what items you will not need and therefore you can leave them at home.

COLLEGE INFORMATION
If you are interested in competing in athletics at the college level there are many things you will want to do as early as your freshmen year in high school. This page will give you some information to help you through this process and we will meet throughout the year as well. Information changes every year so to stay up-to-date you will want to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse and/or communicate with prospective colleges.
The NFHSlearn.com website has a great class called "NCAA Eligibility" which is great for student-athletes and parents. To take this class use the link below and for more classes and resources that can help prepare students for high school and college- scroll to the bottom of this page.
This course is designed to educate high school coaches, administrators, and parents about the NCAA's initial-eligibility requirements. After completing the course, you will be more knowledgeable and prepared to advise your student-athletes about the NCAA initial-eligibility standards, as well as the steps student-athletes need to complete in order to compete in NCAA Divisions I and II athletics.
We have student-athletes of all levels and abilities compete in college athletics. Not everyone is a D1 athlete and most colleges are looking for student-athletes of all abilities. Most of you will either compete at the NCAA level or NAIA level. Both have fabulous athletic and academic programs. Once you decide on a college and you're ready to sign your National Letter of Intent be sure to watch this tutorial first. There will be some College Signing dates assigned throughout the year that you can participate in. Contact the Stevens H.S. Athletic Director for more information.

Student Leadership: Becoming a Leader
Learning to be an effective leader is one of the most important skills that students can learn in high school activities. To help students learn leadership skills, the NFHS has partnered with the Michigan High School Athletic Association to bring you this course in our Student Leadership series: BECOMING A LEADER This course will help you build the foundation to be an effective leader! This course will focus on what it means to be a leader, actions you can take to become a leader, and how to model that leadership. You will learn from the practical thoughts, advice, and experiences of other student athletes from around the country.
Student Leadership: Leading Others

You will learn from the practical thoughts, advice, and experiences of other student athletes from around the country.
Are leaders born, or are they made? While some student-athletes have the characteristics to be a leader, leadership is a learned skill. Most captains receive little to no training on how to be a team leader. With the help of Michigan State University’s Institute for the Study of Youth Sports and the Michigan High School Athletic Association, this course was created to help develop high school team leaders.
Social Media for Students has been designed to give students the information that they need to develop responsible social media habits. This course illustrates the long-term consequences that irresponsible social media usage can have on a student’s educational, athletic, and professional careers.
Name, Image and Likeness, or NIL, is one of the key topics of discussion in the modern landscape for sports and activities. The National Federation of State High School Associations has partnered with Advance to bring you this course on Name, Image and Likeness. This course has been designed to define NIL, provide examples of how it can be leveraged by high school students, identify misconceptions that various stakeholders have about NIL, and highlight aspects that students and families should consider when interested in pursuing NIL opportunities. This course will explain how leveraging NIL does not include students being paid to play their sport, but instead using their own identity to create a brand and business for themselves
Hazing Prevention for Students
Every year, students across the country are affected by incidents of hazing. Together we can end the useless, counterproductive, and often dangerous practice of hazing. This hazing course has been designed to teach students how to identify hazing, when to step in when needed, and why they should notify the proper authorities.
Proper nutrition is key to optimizing health and athletic performance. This course presents guidelines for the diet needed to be ready for athletic practice and competition, and how to refuel afterwards. It gives tips on how you can influence your students’ eating habits outside of the school environment.
Student Mental Health & Suicide Prevention
With a focus on wellness, including both physical and psychological, this course highlights causes, strategies and provides helpful resources.For students, their peers and anyone responsible for their care and well-being, take the course Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.
Appearance and Performance Enhancing Drugs and Substances
The use of Appearance and Performance Enhancing Drugs and Substances, or APEDS, affects every school. To help the interscholastic community address this issue, the NFHS has created this APEDS course. The course explains what APEDS are, what forms they take, and what their effects can be on students. It highlights the reasons why students use APEDS in and out of athletics and gives guidance and resources for detecting and preventing the use of APEDS.
Test anxiety can undermine a student’s academic success. This course will explore effective note-taking, outlining, and study skills to help students prepare for a test, and offer tips for tackling questions and avoiding self-defeating behavior on test day.
This course will take the student step-by-step through a research project - planning the project, identifying sources and conducting the research, evaluating sources, compiling the information in a meaningful way and, finally, presenting the results.
Learning Pro: Reading and Learning Strategies
All individuals learn differently, and this course will help students develop strategies that support their own approaches to learning. Effectively organizing information, employing techniques that increase retention, making meaningful connections with the material, and managing problems that may be getting in the way of academic performance will be explored.
This course will help students identify the optimal environment for learning and provide skills to allow them to take control of their study experiences. Included will be tips on how to prepare to study, how to get organized, the importance of maintaining a study schedule, how to manage distractions, and how to develop good study habits.
